"Mile 26" Rescue Pictures
Jean Luc died May 21, 2010 when
his cabin caught fire and the 100 or so dogs he cared for were left to fend for themselves. On May 30,
2010, after the SPCA refused to help, we packed up our trailer and headed north to do what we could do.

|
We had to cross the Abitibi River
by barge so we could drive as far north along the railway tracks as possible. Some dogs showed signs of being burned by
the fire. Cinders had fallen from the air and landed on them.
|
After travelling up the tracks as far
as we could go we set up the rescue pit stop. The first rail truck down the tracks brought us eight dogs. Stillwater was content to lie under the trailer after
she had been taken out of her crate. There was on where else she wanted to be.

|
We had made puppy formula at home and
brought it with us in a thermos. The first litter out lapped it up eagerly after being shown how.
 |
We had to cross back over the Abitibi
River on our return trip and Stillwater loved the barge ride. She had no idea you could ride on water.

According to the SPCA these were feral
dogs. I am glad Stillwater, Abby and all the rest hadn't known what was being said about them.
Two pups, we named Cinder and Ash, were found three days after the original rescue effort. Rescue workers
found the pups with their mom but she ran off as soon as they approached. The pups were too afraid to move so they were picked
up and brought out. I like to think the mom was doing what she knew was best for her babies by leaving them. She
wasn't ready herself, but her pups needed more. They tried to find the mom again but were unable to. Both Cinder
and Ash had burn marks on them which made it clear just how close to the fire they had been.
